Set up in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain name extension is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Existing third-level domains remained running.
